AppsforAgri is taking part in SmartTree: smart data for healthy crops. Together with Compas Agro, Boomkwekerij Udenhout and Lodders boomkwekerijen, we are developing practical decision support for tree nurseries in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant.
From local measurements to informed decisions
When is the risk of disease increasing? And when is a treatment most likely to be effective? In tree nurseries, the weather, the crop and local growing conditions make a considerable difference. SmartTree brings this information together to help growers and advisers assess their options.
The project combines local sensor measurements, hyperlocal weather information and disease and pest models. Its focus includes powdery mildew, downy mildew and scab. It also explores how early spore detection could support more targeted recommendations before symptoms become visible.
Our contribution: making technology practical
AppsforAgri is responsible for the technical development of the decision support system: from data connections and model integration to an accessible interface for mobile and desktop. We build on our experience with iCrop and SmartFarm IQ.
Connecting to existing sensors, weather stations and working practices is a key principle. Insights need to support growers and advisers in their daily work. Feedback from the nursery trials will therefore help refine both the technology and the way recommendations are presented.

Developing and testing with growers
Compas Agro leads the project, connects crop knowledge with the models, and coordinates field research and knowledge sharing. Boomkwekerij Udenhout and Lodders boomkwekerijen provide trial sites, practical data and user feedback to test and validate the system.
The ambition is to reduce chemical crop protection use by at least 30%, while maintaining yield and quality. This is a project objective to be investigated in practice. Assessment will include product use, treatment timing and crop quality.
Sharing knowledge with the nursery sector
The knowledge gained should also benefit growers beyond the trial sites. The project plan therefore includes six innovation days, practical demonstrations and resources such as factsheets and instructional materials. Through our own channels, we will share information about the technical development and experiences from the project.
This brings crop knowledge, local data and software together, grounded in daily practice and aimed at better decisions for healthy crops.
Supported by European and provincial funding
SmartTree is supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the province of Noord-Brabant within the European Innovation Partnership (EIP).
